Flannan Isles

The Flannan Isles, also known as the Seven Hunters, lie 20 miles off Uig. They support vast colonies of seabirds, including a gannet colony on Raoireim. A chapel dedicated to St Flannan and several bothies remain on Eilean Mor and Eilean Taighe. The famous Stevenson lighthouse (built 1895-99) lighthouse was site of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthousemen in 1900 – see the details on the Comann Eachdraidh Uig page. The lighthouse is now automated and the island is deserted.

There are obvious parallels with St Kilda – and some notable differences – and it’s our intention to include interpretation of the Flannans in Ionad Hiort.

These photos are by Murdanie Macdonald, captain of the Cuma which sails regularly to St Kilda and the Flannans.
