Visit to St Kilda | Hiort
The design team visited St Kilda to experience the landscape firsthand.
Immersing themselves in the scale of the cliffs, the shifting quality of light, the exposure to weather and the tangible presence of history was an essential stage in understanding the site and its story.
Ionad Hiort | St Kilda Centre’s architectural development is not simply about construction. It is about stewardship and ensuring that any new intervention sits with care and respect for St Kilda and its story.

The team also visited the proposed site at Mangersta.
Understanding the topography of Geodha Sgoilt was fundamental to the design process. Through section studies and detailed site analysis, they explored how the building could be carefully embedded into the terrain responding to prevailing weather, views, ground conditions and access.
These investigations shaped key decisions around height, shelter, materiality and how the building would sit within the land.
